Sommerfugl (say it: SOM-er-fool) is the Danish and Norwegian word for butterfly. It's made up of two parts: sommer, meaning summer, and fugl, meaning bird. A summer bird. Because butterflies appear in the warm months and fly around like tiny, colourful birds.
It's poetic. It's Nordic. And it captures exactly what we wanted our brand to feel like.
The Story Behind the Name
Sommerfugl Kids launched in Melbourne in July 2019 with a small collection of baby t-bar shoes and sandals. The name came from a love of Scandinavian design — clean, functional, beautiful — and the idea that childhood, like summer, is brief, bright, and worth savouring.
From Shoes to Everything
What started as shoes quickly grew. Customers asked for headbands. Then smocks. Then comforters, sunglasses, hats, hair clips, and more. Every product was added because parents genuinely wanted it — not because we were trying to fill a catalogue.
The Brand Philosophy
