The check that handles chaos

Gingham baby smock bibs in waterproof polyester with a soft lining, made for mealtimes, paint and water play. The long sleeve smocks cover arms as well as fronts, with sleeves that stay put at the wrist, while the short sleeve smocks keep elbows free for an Australian summer. Both have an adjustable neck fastening and both are sized 6-12 months to 3 years, so one smock follows a baby from first purees to toddler tantrums.

Five colours run across both sleeve lengths. In long sleeve, pick from flamingo, strawberry, lemon, light blue and navy, and every one has a short sleeve twin, such as navy and lemon. Gingham looks as good on a picnic rug as it does in a highchair, and a busy check hides the evidence far better than a plain colour ever will.

For hot days, the short sleeve baby smocks add the Everyday prints, and a silicone bib over the top catches whatever drops. Our smock vs silicone bib guide explains the combo, and a smock tucked into a baby gift set makes a present that actually gets used. Australian owned, shipped from Melbourne.

Long or short sleeve gingham? Long sleeve for baby-led weaning, painting and the cooler months, when arms are right in the action. Short sleeve for summer, outdoor play and toddlers who push their sleeves up the moment you look away. Same waterproof fabric, same colours and the same fit through the body, so it comes down to how much arm you want covered. Plenty of families keep one of each.

How do I wash a gingham smock? Wipe it down after most meals and put it in the machine when it needs a proper clean. Follow the care label, and line dry rather than leaving it in a hot dryer, which is kinder to the waterproof layer and keeps the lining soft. Two smocks in rotation means one is always clean, which matters more than you would think by Thursday.

What age does it fit? Sized 6-12 months to 3 years, with an adjustable neck so the same smock follows a baby from first spoonfuls well into the toddler years. Smaller babies get a roomier fit with more coverage, which is no bad thing while the spoon is still a work in progress. Bigger toddlers get a neater fit that still covers the lap.
