Baby Sun Hats: Throwing Shade

Throwing shade, in the nicest possible way. Wide brim Daphne sun hats and Sunny bucket hats that cover little faces, ears and necks, in soft cotton with chin straps that stay put when the sea breeze doesn’t. Whether the hat stays on for longer than the walk to the car is, as always, up to them.

Shade that goes where they go

Baby sun hats in UPF50+ rated fabric, covering the face, ears and back of the neck, the spots where little skin burns first. The Daphne wide brim baby sun hat gives the biggest circle of shade for beach days and long stretches outside, in white, sand stripe, cornflower blue stripe, fairy floss stripe, crepe stripe and the floral Petal Play.

The Sunny baby bucket hat is the softer, squashier option that rolls into a nappy bag and comes out ready to wear, in Petal Parade, Dino Stomp and Jungle Pals, with a chin strap for the thirtieth attempt to pull it off. Every hat comes in 50cm and 52cm, and the sand stripe Daphne also runs to 54cm for bigger heads.

A hat is one part of the sun plan. Add UV400 baby sunglasses for the eyes, browse the wider baby sun protection range for the rest of summer, and once the weather turns, baby beanies take over. Australian owned, shipped from Melbourne.

What size sun hat does my baby need? Measure around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and ears, then pick the size that matches or sits just above. Our sizes run 50cm, 52cm and 54cm. If they are between sizes, go up and use the chin strap to snug it. Our sun hat size chart in Guides has the full how-to.

Wide brim or bucket hat? Both shade the face, ears and back of the neck. The Daphne wide brim gives the most coverage for beach days and long stretches outside. The Sunny bucket hat is softer and squashier, which makes it handy for the nappy bag, the pram and toddlers who object to anything floppy.

How do I keep it on? Start early and keep it routine: hat on at the front door, every time, and most babies stop protesting within a week or two. Do the chin strap up so it is snug but you can slip a finger underneath. A hat works best alongside shade, sunscreen and covered arms, so slip, slop, slap, seek and slide still applies.
