What to Wear Under a Baby Smock (Yes, It Matters)

It's a valid question. If the smock is covering everything, does it matter what's underneath?

Yes. Kind of. Here's the logic.

For Indoor Feeding

A nappy and nothing else. Seriously. If you're home, if the room is warm, strip down to the nappy before putting the feeding smock on. Less to wash when food inevitably finds a gap. The smock covers chest and arms; the highchair tray catches the rest.

For Daycare

A basic onesie or tee underneath the long-sleeve smock. Something that can handle a stain if the smock shifts. Avoid your favourite outfit — Murphy's Law applies ruthlessly to children's clothing.

For Outdoor Messy Play

Layers you don't mind getting dirty. Old leggings, a dark tee, and a waterproof smock over the top. The smock handles the worst of it; the underlying layer is the safety net.

For Art Sessions

Same approach as outdoor play. Dark colours underneath, smock on top. Paint has a supernatural ability to find the one uncovered centimetre, so don't put them in white.

For Summer

A short-sleeve smock over a nappy or light singlet. Keep it breathable. Overheating is worse than stains.
