Your baby's favourite headband smells like yoghurt. The comforter has been dragged through the garden. The smock has seen things. Time for a wash, but how?
Headbands and Bows
Hand wash in cool water with a little mild detergent. Press the water out rather than wringing, reshape while damp and lay flat to dry, out of direct sun. The nylon band will hold its stretch; the bow may need a gentle reshape. Skip the machine and the dryer: heat and agitation can warp the fabric.
Comforters
Our comforters are machine washable. Cold wash, gentle cycle, then line dry in the shade or lay flat. They get softer with every wash, which is actually a feature, not a flaw. Avoid fabric softener; it can reduce breathability.
Waterproof Smocks
Wipe with a damp cloth after every meal, while the mess is fresh. Most of it stays on the surface, so a full wash is not needed every day.
For a deeper clean, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with the back ties done up so they do not knot themselves to the sheets. Skip bleach and fabric softener, which are hard on waterproof fabric, and check the care label on yours.
Hang to dry in the shade rather than the dryer. Waterproof smocks dry fast, which is the whole point. For dried-on Weet-Bix, soak in cold water for ten minutes first, then wipe.

Leather Shoes
Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Condition occasionally with a leather balm to keep the leather supple. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Never machine wash leather.
Sunglasses
Warm water and mild soap. Dry with a soft cloth. Store in a case or pouch to prevent scratching. Our sunnies are light rather than indestructible, so avoid sitting on them (looking at you, nappy bag).
General Tips
Treat stains immediately. The longer food sits, the harder it sets. A paste of bicarb soda and water works well on organic stains. Avoid bleach on coloured items.
