The professional photographer is booked. The location is chosen. And now everyone needs to coordinate without looking like a matching pyjama catalogue.
Start with Baby
Baby's outfit and accessories dictate the palette. Choose baby's look first — it's the smallest, most specific wardrobe to work with. A blush headband and ivory outfit? Now everyone else wears warm neutrals and soft pinks.
The Colour Palette Trick
Choose three to four colours maximum. One dominant (worn by everyone in some form), one accent (just one person), and one or two neutrals. Example: cream, dusty rose, olive, and tan. Baby wears cream with a dusty rose flower headband and nutmeg sandals.
Texture Over Print
Avoid busy prints that compete with each other. Instead, vary texture: linen for dad, cotton knit for mum, muslin for baby. A knit headband adds beautiful texture in close-up shots.
The Comfort Factor
If baby isn't comfortable, the photos won't work. Choose soft, stretchy clothes and accessories they're used to wearing. This is not the time to debut a brand new, never-worn headband. Stick with favourites.
Spring Locations and Accessories
Flower fields: floral headbands are obvious but gorgeous. Parks: neutral tones that don't compete with green backgrounds. Beach: hats and sunnies for sun protection that doubles as styling.
The Post-Shoot Trick
Pack a feeding smock for the celebratory ice cream or café stop afterward. Nobody wants to stain the photo outfit five minutes after the session ends.
