The Newborn Photo Session: Accessories That Make It

The Newborn Photo Session: Accessories That Make It

Newborn photographers will tell you the same thing: keep it simple. The baby is the star. The props are the supporting cast.

That said, the right accessories elevate a newborn session from sweet to stunning.

Headbands

A single, delicate tiny bow in a neutral tone is the go-to for newborn shoots. It adds detail without distraction. Ivory, blush, and chalk are the most popular choices among photographers we work with.

Comforters

Drape a cotton comforter beside or around the baby. The soft texture and muted colours create depth and interest. Benni Bunny in ivory is a favourite — the floppy ears frame beautifully in close-up shots.

Shoes

Even though newborns aren't walking, a pair of baby sandals placed beside tiny feet creates one of those heart-stopping detail shots. The size contrast is everything.

What Not to Bring

Skip anything heavy, scratchy, or hard. No chunky headbands. No stiff shoes. No props that require the baby to be in an uncomfortable position. The best photos come from comfortable, relaxed babies.

Timing Tips

The ideal window for posed newborn photos is five to fourteen days. Babies are sleepier and more flexible in the early days. Bring a full feed, a warm room, and patience. And accessories — keep them within arm's reach but don't force them if baby isn't having it.
