How to Choose the Best Baby Comforter for Your Little One

If you've ever watched a toddler clutch a well-loved blankie like their life depends on it, you already know the power of a good baby comforter. But with so many options out there, how do you choose the right one?

We've been making baby comforters at Sommerfugl Kids for years, and we've learned a thing or two about what babies actually love (and what parents appreciate). Here's our guide to finding the perfect comforter for your little one.

What actually is a baby comforter?

A baby comforter — sometimes called a lovey, security blanket, or comforter toy — is a small, soft item that your baby forms an attachment to. Unlike a stuffed toy or a full-sized blanket, a comforter is designed to be lightweight, easy to hold, and safe for little ones. It becomes a source of familiarity and security, helping your baby feel calm in new situations, during sleep transitions, or when you're not right there beside them.

Why do babies need one?

Babies are wired to seek comfort. A comforter gives them something consistent — the same texture, the same scent, the same softness — that signals safety. This is especially helpful for self-settling at nap time and bedtime, easing separation anxiety when starting daycare, providing reassurance during travel or unfamiliar environments, and creating a positive sleep routine from an early age.

What should you look for in a baby comforter?

Not all comforters are created equal. Here's what matters most:

Material matters most. Look for natural, breathable fabrics like organic cotton or muslin. These are gentle on sensitive skin, regulate temperature well, and get softer over time. Avoid anything synthetic or heavily dyed — your baby will be chewing, sucking, and snuggling this thing constantly.

Keep it flat and lightweight. The best baby comforters are flat rather than stuffed. This makes them easier for tiny hands to grip, safer for sleep (better airflow), and easier to pack in a nappy bag. A flat comforter also picks up your scent more easily, which is one of the main reasons babies become attached to them.

No detachable parts. Buttons, plastic eyes, ribbons that pull off — these are all choking hazards. Look for stitched facial features and securely attached details.

Something to grab onto. Babies love texture. Knotted feet, floppy ears, tags — these give your baby something to fiddle with, which is great for sensory development and self-soothing.

Easy to wash. This comforter is going to get dirty. A lot. Make sure it's machine washable and holds up well after repeated washes.

When should you introduce a baby comforter?

You can start from birth. During the newborn stage, keep the comforter with you — tuck it inside your shirt while feeding, sleep with it for a night or two — so it picks up your scent. Then use it during cuddles, feeds, and supervised tummy time so your baby starts to associate it with comfort and closeness.

For unsupervised sleep, most Australian guidelines suggest waiting until around 7 months before leaving a comforter in the cot. Before then, remove it once your baby falls asleep. Always follow Red Nose Australia's safe sleep recommendations.

Should you buy a backup?

Yes. Absolutely yes. Once your baby bonds with a comforter, losing it feels like a genuine emergency (for everyone involved). Buy two from the start, rotate them so they wear evenly, and keep the spare somewhere safe. Future you will be very grateful.
