Daycare Essentials: What to Pack in the Bag

Daycare Essentials: What to Pack in the Bag

The first daycare drop-off is emotional enough without realising you've forgotten half their gear. Here's the packing list that covers everything — including the items centres request but never tell you about until day one.

The Must-Haves

A labelled sun hat. Most centres require UPF-rated hats and operate a 'no hat, no play' policy from September through April. A long-sleeve smock for art and meal activities. Spare clothes (at least two full changes). Nappies. Bottles or sippy cups. Sunscreen (if over six months).

The Comfort Items

A baby comforter for nap time. This is non-negotiable for many children. The familiar scent and texture helps them settle in an unfamiliar environment. Label it clearly. Consider having a 'daycare comforter' that stays in their bag so it doesn't get mixed up with the home one.

The Practical Extras

A waterproof smock that wipes clean (centres love parents who send these). Hair clips or a headband to keep hair out of food and paint. A wet bag for dirty clothes. Spare baby sunglasses for outdoor play.

Labelling Everything

Label. Every. Single. Thing. Including the smock, the hat, the comforter, and every spare sock. Things go missing in childcare with impressive consistency. Labels are the only defence.
