There are two kinds of parent at the start of solids. The one who thinks a small amount of pumpkin will be involved, and the one who has already bought the smock. Welcome to the second group.

A bib that covers the actual problem

A standard bib protects a triangle of chest and nothing else, which is fine for dribble and useless for weetbix. A baby smock bib covers the chest, the shoulders, the arms and most of the lap, because that is where the food actually goes. Ours are waterproof rather than water resistant, so nothing soaks through to the outfit underneath, and they wipe down at the sink instead of going into the wash after every single meal.

Long sleeve or short sleeve

Long sleeve is the default for solids, painting and anything involving a spoon held at an unusual angle. Short sleeve suits hot weather, quick snacks and older toddlers who have mostly worked out where their mouth is. Most families keep both and choose by season. Our long sleeve baby smocks cover the full arm for the messiest stages.

Everyday, Premium and Gingham

The Everyday range is the one to buy two of. Lightweight, quick drying, and in prints that hide a multitude. The Premium range uses a heavier waterproof fabric with a more structured fit, which holds its shape through a long daycare day. The Gingham range is the quieter option, a classic check rather than a busy print, and it comes in both long and short sleeve across five colourways: light blue, navy, lemon, strawberry and flamingo. It is what people reach for when they want the smock to look deliberate in photographs.

Sizing and fit

Smock bibs are sized for infants and toddlers, roughly six months through to three years, with an adjustable closure that grows with them. A smock should sit loose. The whole point is covering the clothes underneath, so a snug fit rather defeats the exercise. Sleeves should reach past the wrist without swallowing the hand entirely.

Washing and drying

Wipe with a damp cloth after most meals and let it air dry, which takes minutes rather than hours. For the bigger occasions, a gentle machine wash and a flat dry is fine. Avoid the dryer and avoid direct heat, both of which shorten the life of a waterproof coating faster than anything your baby can manage.

Two is the honest number

One smock means one is always in the wash or in the daycare bag, which is to say one is never where you need it. Two means mealtimes carry on regardless. Twin packs do the maths for you, and they arrive in coordinating prints rather than whatever happened to be left.

Which smock for which stage

Around six months, when solids start, long sleeve smocks do the heavy lifting. From about eighteen months, when the aim improves and the weather warms, short sleeve becomes more practical. From two, art and craft becomes the bigger mess and long sleeve comes back. Everyday prints suit daily use, Premium suits daycare and longer days, and Gingham is the one to choose when the smock is going to be in the photos.

Waterproof, and what that actually means

Waterproof is not the same as water resistant. A resistant fabric holds off a splash and lets a soaked bib through. A waterproof one keeps the outfit underneath dry through a full bowl of yoghurt. Heat is what kills a waterproof coating, so skip the dryer, skip the hot wash, and wipe down at the sink between meals. Air dry flat rather than hanging in direct sun.

How many, and what to pair

Two is the minimum and three is comfortable if your little one is at daycare, since one lives in the bag and never comes home when you expect it. Twin packs are the cheaper route. For quick snacks away from the high chair, silicone baby bibs and feeding sets rinse in seconds and roll up small. For full arm coverage, see long sleeve baby smocks, and baby gift sets and bundles pair a smock with the rest of the kit.
