Sun hats are sized by head circumference, not age, which is good news, because two babies the same age rarely share a head. Measure once, pick the size, then check the fit.

Quick answer
What size sun hat does my baby need? Measure around the widest part of the head and choose the hat size that matches it or sits just above. Our Daphne wide brim sun hat comes in 50cm and 52cm, and the Sand Striped colourway also comes in 54cm. Between sizes? Go up.
Measure
How to Measure in Thirty Seconds
Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and ears. No tape? Use a piece of string, then lay it against a ruler. Keep it snug, not tight, and measure while bub is calm. Mid-feed works a treat.
The chart
Baby Sun Hat Size Chart
| Head measurement | Daphne size | Fit notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 48cm | Wait, or 50cm to grow into | A 50cm hat will sit loose and the brim may slip over the eyes |
| 48 to 50cm | 50cm | Snug and secure |
| 50 to 52cm | 52cm | Snug and secure |
| 52 to 54cm | 54cm | Sand Striped only |
Heads grow fast in the early years, so re-measure every few months, or whenever the hat starts leaving a mark or perching on top.
The fit
Check the Fit
- Level, not perched. The hat should sit evenly around the head, not balance on the crown.
- Brim does its job. Face, neck and ears in shade, eyes clear.
- Snug, not tight. No red line on the forehead when it comes off.
- Strap safety. Cancer Council advises a long strap has a safety snap, sits at the back of the head or is trimmed, to avoid a choking hazard.
- Off for sleep. Red Nose recommends no head coverings for any sleep, pram naps included.

How do I measure my baby's head for a sun hat?
Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and ears, snug but not tight. A piece of string and a ruler works too.
What sizes does the Daphne sun hat come in?
50cm and 52cm in every colourway, and the Sand Striped colourway also comes in 54cm.
What if my baby is between sizes?
Go up. A hat a touch roomy still shades. One that is too small perches on top and gets pulled off.
Can I size by age?
Measure instead. Head size varies a lot between babies of the same age, so a tape measure beats a birthday every time.
Should my baby wear a sun hat in the pram?
Yes, when awake and out in the sun. Take it off for naps, as Red Nose recommends no head coverings for sleep, and use the pram hood and shade instead.
